Chapter 3
“What do you want for dinner
honey?” Saying this as she
is clattering dishes and putting away groceries.
“That beef and noodles we had last night was good.
Do we have any left?” “Sure,
I’ll warm it up. It won’t
take long.”
(On the TV)
“…and Senator Douglas was left speechless today as a man in the
crowd spoke up. He had
inherently good philosophies that he countered him with.
We now go to our correspondent who was on the scene, Amy Streeter.
Go ahead Amy, what do you have for us?”
“A man spoke out to Senator Douglas today, leaving him speechless
and this is what the man had to say.”
(Taped) …”let’s
start with the economy. How do
you believe the
US
economy will grow when the trade deficit is increasing, our manufacturing
is going overseas, and our productivity is low in comparison?
How do you believe it is going to grow when our economic system is
spending more than it is earning, relying on information as a product and
value added food; and the entertainment industry, our leading export
now… Your economy with world trade is a giant bartering community, a
giant conglomerate of companies if you will.
I am just wondering what your giant conglomerate company called the
United States economy is making as a whole, and if it is more than it’s
spending. We have a trade
deficit, not surplus. World
trade needs to be “brought in”, not throw us out of business!
Combine the free enterprise system with any other system at once
will jeopardize our entire fundamental system!
We have been out of kilter for a really long time Senator.”
Amy Streeter following up; “The
crowd was struck by the comments, something that hit home to everybody at
the Senators meeting with his constituents.
The senator was struck too, wrapped it up after the question by
this man, and departed.” “Amy,
do we know who this man is?” “No,
but we will continue to work on this story, and will get back with
anything we can find out.” “Thank
you Amy, and now for a commercial break, as we return with the progress
with the Katrina disaster response review.”
We sat there looking at each other in
awe. Marge had a blank look on
her face as she was looking at me, eyes apparently focused to look through
me, not at me. You always
criticize yourself when you see a picture of yourself; but being on
television; that is wild! Your voice sounds funny, you look funny.
…and what did all this mean that they all listened so intently,
enough to put it on the six o’clock news.
“So what did you do yesterday?
I thought you were getting packaging tape?”
“They were out front of the store Margie and he asked me if I had
a question. You know me Marge.
I have to say something. I
was just playing with him a little, not meaning to mess with his day,
especially do something like this!”, as I waved my hand toward the TV
set, realizing I didn’t just watch a home video.
“I just asked him a few simple questions.
It was an experience, I have to tell you.
It is no big deal.” Is
supper ready? I am
hungry…”
The night went by fast, a good movie
from the video store, a quiet evening with the wife, a small glass of red
wine to knock the edge off. They
say red wine is good for you now. That
is one recent claim that works for us so we choose to believe this one. We
have “selective belief”, definitely in health recommendations. That is
for sure. I am actually
feeling pretty good about the event on TV.
It was “a charge”. Believe
I am going to finally sleep like a baby tonight.
