Chapter 30
My day had started with an excitement
now. I hadn’t slept all
night. It was the day I was to
take the oath of office. I had
wanted this day for many years. It
was now about to happen. I
pulled my slippers from under my bed and put them on, and shuffled to the
coffee pot, prepared for me on the timer that I set the night before.
Coffee was ready, and black, just the way I like it.
I flipped on the television to see the morning news about the
day’s events, me taking the oath of office to become the next President
of the
United States
. I kicked back a moment on
the couch to relax and let the coffee take effect and wake me up, then to
take my morning shower. I
always had high aspirations and goals, and today my highest goal was about
to be realized.
At that moment my cell phone rang.
“What are you doing old man?
Are you ready to take the oath of office?”
“Well hello there Hughes old friend?
How is the House of Representatives doing, Mr. Speaker?”
“Good President Noble. We
have the power of the house, and you now, the presidency.
How does it finally feel? Guess
we are the two most powerful people in
America
now, aren’t we?” “Guess
so ‘ol man Foster.” “I
am still up for that regular game of golf.
You haven’t cancelled on me have ya?
I am counting on you to be there you know, just like always.”
“Don’t worry old friend. Will
be there as usual, usual place and time.”
“How is your man Clancy doing?
Is he doing alright in prison?
I am sure sorry about you loosing such a good assistant there.”
“Yeah Ben, he was a good man for years.
Guess he just snapped; you know how it goes.
These guys get politics in their blood, and you never know what
they will do. I am going to
miss him. He was the best
assistant anyone could ever have. He
took all this like a man too, this prison thing.
I am still proud of him, even though he did pull a trigger and
nearly kill a man.” “Guess
history writes itself in its events, doesn’t it my good friend?”
“Yes I guess it does, old friend.
Well, got to get ready to go to my inauguration.
Will I be seeing you there today?”
“Sure will, wouldn’t miss it for the world.
My good friend is about to be President of the
United States
! President Noble.
Get use to it. See you
then. Get your haircut!”
With that, the phone hung up. It
was going to be an eventful day for me for sure.
At that moment Fran Reeder walked in from the bedroom with her
silky red night gown on. “Was
that Foster?” “Yes, he’s
checking up on me as usual. You
know how he is.” “He
flirts with me every time he calls, Ben.
Your wife even told me I should tell him off.
Of course your wife doesn’t know everything, does she Ben.”
Fran winks at me and heads into the bathroom and closes the door
behind her. I thought to
myself, life will be good now, just like an orchestrated concert, and the
beautiful music is about to play. What
could be more perfect…
