Chapter 6
It is ten minutes to 6, and Margie
and I are waiting for the news with anxious nervousness and excitement.
We are now sitting at the edge of our couch, waiting for the show
like a game show addict. News
has taken on a whole new meaning. I
also believe when something else happens, they would forget me just as
fast as they found me. I am
prepared for that and know that day will come; at least I tell myself I am
ready. I have never had an
experience anything like this before.
The subject on the news wasn’t general, but about me!
I had thought about it all day at work. I
thought about the cameras rolling while I was still wiping the sleep out
of my eyes. I thought about
the way the reporters were holding the microphones, like a remote control
pointing at the television and flipping channels with conviction.
Visions of the green colors in the big lenses of the television
cameras flashed through my mind, as they were being constantly adjusted
and pointed right at my eyes. The
day was full of exciting thoughts about these events taking place.
Work flew by.
“News at 6 starts now!”
The dramatic music played as the Anchorwoman holds her papers, and
starts to speak. “This is
Sarah Keller. We have
identified the man this morning that put Senator Douglas in an unavoidable
defense yesterday at his speech at “Big Market”; and we now bring you
to Amy Streeter, our correspondent covering the story.
Amy?”
Wow.
Headline news! Top of
the hour! I figured they would
have a comment about me at the end of the program, if I made the news at
all. It really must be a slow
news day. The story continues,
“We have identified the man as Golden Simms, nicknamed Goldie, and he as
stated in an interview this morning. He
had fundamentally based ideas which have created his opinions about
matters that are pressing for all of us today.
These ideas do have one common thread, to be fundamental in
nature.” We did an interview
this morning with Mr. Simms, and this is what he had to say.”
(The
recorded interview) I see it
as plain writing on the wall. The
economy hasn’t changed fundamentally just the medium of trade, and the
size, maybe products, the system has never changed.
I believe we want that system of free enterprise to continue to
work for us. I believe if we
do want a democracy, it does need to continue.
The free enterprise system is the fundamental of the workings of a
democracy, giving everyone the chance to be independent, whether they help
others by working for their company, or working for themselves in their
little mole hill. I am a
President. I am just a
president of a small company.
“He goes on to talk about FEMA with
his response method”…
(Goldie’s
interview continued)… roll in with a big truck, self contained generator
and a powerful radio transmitter. They
can tune in to the local channels, and assume the roll of dispatcher with
the equipment that was lost. With
a team of dispatchers, maps posted on the walls of each area in detail as
well as where everything is in relation to each other, as well as a chart
of responder groups as they arrive and can be ready for service.
I would have everyone working with the dispatcher to identify the
problem areas. Then the
resources that are in the area such as fire, military, rescue, police,
even residents and the press. Have
them respond with a level of alert based on numbers at risk... …Go to a
construction site and see their scheduling, and you would understand.
They can get miracles done with good organization in thirty days.
They have a job, and everyone shows up to fill that job.
In a disaster the job starts now.
“This is indeed some very
fascinating stuff Amy. What do
you make of it.” “I get a
real sense of calmness and control when I am around Mr. Simms.
Goldie as he calls himself. He
has a simple way of communicating so that all understands and the humbling
lack of effort when it comes to selling his ideas.
They are just as refreshing as I have seen in a very long time.
He just answers the questions asked, never adds what is not
relevant, and keeps it short and to the point.
I feel with some more questions asked of him, we would find other
answers to today’s issues that should really be looked at.
With the presidential elections coming up in the next couple of
years, it would be wonderful to have someone like him as President that
can affect people and solve issues like I feel Goldie is capable of, a Golden
Boy of sorts. We sure
could use someone like that Sarah. He
is not bred into the political system, and has an objective opinion on
everything, with no trained response.
It is purely refreshing. You
can’t help but like him.” “Thanks
Amy. That was Amy Streeter
reporting. Nice job… …and
now to our sponsors.”
We just sat there in our front room
looking at each other; speechless. We
had the first several minutes of the news, a featured headline story that
took the entire segment of time before the first commercial break.
Why this is such a big deal; I just can’t figure it out.
“I can’t believe you Goldie.”
Margie walks over to the wine rack and pours a glass.
“I am having my glass early tonight.
I might have two. What
does all this mean Goldie?”
